Pathfinders for Autism (PFA) proudly announced the launch of its 25th Anniversary Community Connector Campaign, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing autism resources and services across Maryland by 2030. This ambitious campaign is a testament to PFA’s enduring commitment to the autism community, reflecting 25 years of dedicated service and advocacy.
The 25th Anniversary Community Connector Campaign will strategically place specialized, community-based professionals in each of Maryland’s five regions. This move will significantly expand PFA’s reach, ensuring that families and individuals statewide have greater access to tailored autism support. Since PFA’s founding in 2000, autism prevalence has surged by an astounding 594%, underscoring the urgency for expanded services. Today, it’s no longer a question of if you’ll meet someone with autism, but when. This statewide initiative is designed to meet the growing demand for personalized support and specialized care that reflects the diverse needs of Maryland’s communities.
“The launch of the Community Connector Campaign is a deeply personal milestone for Pathfinders for Autism and me,” said PFA co-founder Polly Winde Surhoff. “As a family, we’ve seen firsthand the gaps in support that families and professionals face. This campaign is our commitment to closing those gaps, ensuring that every Maryland family, professional, and community member can access the personalized autism resources and services they need to thrive.”
How the Community Connector Program Will Make a Difference:
- Training New Professionals: The program will equip local professionals with autism-specific knowledge and skills, empowering them to serve Maryland’s diverse population more effectively. By embedding trained experts within communities, PFA will ensure that individuals with autism receive high-quality, specialized care close to home.
- Building Stronger Communities: Through enhanced event programming tailored to Maryland’s five regions, the campaign will foster deeper community connections. These events will create inclusive spaces for individuals with autism and their families, strengthening local support networks and promoting greater understanding and acceptance.
- Recruiting Volunteers: The success of the Community Connector Campaign will also rely on dedicated volunteers. PFA will engage community members to help implement new programs, advocate for autism awareness, and collaborate with local businesses to build inclusive environments.
- Growing Advocacy and Awareness: Expanding public understanding of autism is a core goal of the campaign. PFA will focus on raising awareness about safety, community integration, and resource access, ensuring that individuals with autism are better supported in their daily lives.
To bring this vision to life, Pathfinders for Autism has set an ambitious goal to raise $1.8 million in 2025. The campaign is chaired by prominent leaders, including Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, Dr. Mohan Suntha, president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System, and Joe Knott, president of Henry J. Knott Masonry. Their leadership and passion will be instrumental in driving the campaign forward.
Leadership gifts of $50,000 and $25,000 will play a pivotal role in the campaign’s success. Donors at these levels will gain exclusive access to special events, including the highly anticipated Pathfinders for Autism 25th Anniversary Concert—an intimate evening featuring a national recording artist. This event will not only celebrate PFA’s remarkable journey but also highlight the community’s unwavering support.
A Legacy of Impact: 25 Years of Serving Maryland’s Autism Community
Since its founding in 2000 by parents of children with autism—at a time when autism awareness was limited—Pathfinders for Autism has become a trusted resource for families, individuals, and professionals throughout Maryland. The organization’s Resource Center, staffed by parents who understand the unique challenges autism presents, has been a lifeline for thousands.
Over the past 25 years, PFA has:
- Served more than 227,000 individuals in Maryland, including 123,124 families
- Provided 2,554 individuals with essential safety training
- Delivered community training to 48,787 law enforcement officers, parents, healthcare providers, and other professionals
- Hosted over 50,000 individuals at free recreational activities, creating inclusive spaces for families to enjoy community outings without fear of judgment
Despite these significant achievements, the demand for autism services continues to grow. In Maryland, 1 in 43 children are now diagnosed with autism, with 16,000 students receiving autism services in public schools. Additionally, it’s estimated that 1 in 45 adults in Maryland are on the autism spectrum, further highlighting the critical need for comprehensive support.
The 25th Anniversary Community Connector Campaign represents PFA’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of Maryland’s autism community. By investing in local professionals, expanding community programs, and raising awareness, Pathfinders for Autism aims to create a future where every Marylander affected by autism can access the resources they need to thrive.
Through the power of community and the generosity of supporters, PFA is confident it can continue its mission of improving the lives of individuals with autism and their families—not just today, but for generations to come.
