Dance Studio Breaks Barriers with Inclusivity

A dance studio in Harford County is home to an inclusive dance program designed for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other developmental delays. This unique program emphasizes the importance of self-empowerment and celebrates the abilities of all dancers.

“You shouldn’t label yourself as a disability but as an ability,” dance student Ciara Gentry said. This sentiment reflects the program’s core philosophy, encouraging students to embrace their unique talents and express themselves through movement.

Dancers aged 8 years and older are welcomed to join the classes led by the dedicated Coach Nicole Dover. Her passion for inclusive dance shines through as she creates a supportive and encouraging environment.

“When the lights go on and everybody lines up, it’s like wow, I can’t believe Nicole got all those kids to do all those things on that stage,” dance parent Deborah Vrankin said. This powerful observation highlights the transformative experience that the dance program offers, not just to the students but also to their families, who are filled with pride and joy as they witness their loved ones shine on stage.

While Coach Nicole breaks down barriers for her students, she faces a significant challenge of her own. She has been diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer, now at stage four.

“We realized the extent of how much it spread: throughout my bones, my sternum, and a multitude of lymph nodes,” Dover said, revealing the gravity of her situation. Despite the challenges that come with her diagnosis, Dover remains committed to her role as an inclusive dance teacher, finding strength in her students and their achievements.

Dover’s journey with breast cancer began during her junior year of college, a time that should have been filled with excitement but instead became a battle for her health. On move-in day, she received confirmation of her diagnosis, a moment that would forever alter the course of her life.

Soon after, Dover began chemotherapy and radiation treatment and underwent a bilateral mastectomy at just 20 years old. “I made the decision to continue staying as a full-time student and staying on the dance team,” Dover said. Her determination and resilience allowed her to maintain her academic and artistic pursuits, demonstrating her unwavering spirit.

Supported by a community of friends, including her roommates and the university’s dance team, Dover graduated on time in 2008 with a Bachelor’s in Business Communications. “I do have that spark, that light, that fight, that love that radiates through me in everything that I do and that I am a symbol of life and not giving up,” Dover said. This statement encapsulates her philosophy and serves as an inspiration to everyone she encounters.

After graduation, Dover chose to enter the field of clinical social work, further expanding her commitment to helping others. She also coached a cheerleading team competing in the Special Olympics, paving the way for her current role as the instructor for Supernova Dance Company’s Special Needs Dance Team. In this position, she continues to inspire and uplift her students, fostering a sense of belonging and achievement.

“I always like to say, he’s not my son with Down syndrome,” Laura Feiler said, reflecting the inclusive perspective that permeates the program. “Coach Nicole just sees our kids for who they are and she’s the reason he can dance.” This recognition of each child’s individuality underscores the program’s mission to provide a nurturing space where everyone can thrive.

The professional titles that Coach Nicole holds are overshadowed by how others perceive her—as a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration. “Two years ago, I had a very unexpected breast cancer diagnosis and it’s scary, and it’s hard and it’s really long and she was my light through that,” Feiler said. The support and encouragement she offers to those around her are invaluable, proving that the bonds formed in the dance studio extend beyond the dance floor.

From volunteers to students and their families, Dover has become a symbol of strength, choosing to focus on living life to the fullest despite her diagnosis. “That’s not what I want my focus to be. I don’t want it to be about disease. I want it to be about life and living and surrounding myself with beautiful people helps me feel alive,” Dover said. This philosophy resonates deeply within the inclusive dance program, where the joy of movement transcends challenges.
