Galila Ibrahim, an Urbana High School senior, recently completed a sensory playground painting designed to promote inclusion and help children express their emotions in new and meaningful ways. This vibrant artwork is already becoming a vital tool for students, especially those with disabilities, to communicate their needs through color, symbols, and interactive designs.

How One Student’s Vision is Changing a Community Playground

Inspired by her brother, who has a learning disability, Galila recognized the challenges many children face when trying to communicate their feelings. Determined to make a difference, she teamed up with others to paint a sensory playground mural filled with emotional imagery and symbols. This sensory-rich artwork encourages children to connect with their feelings and express themselves freely, breaking down barriers that often make social interaction difficult for neurodivergent students.

The sensory painting goes beyond just visual appeal—it’s a purposeful, interactive space where students can build emotional awareness and find comfort. As Karen Hopson, principal of Centerville Elementary, explains, “They can come out here and use art to really share their feelings and have an outlet. It’s an opportunity not just for movement but just to feel free and be themselves.”
