The High Road School of Cecil County, located in Elkton, recently held its inaugural Autism and Transition Resource Fair, a pivotal event aimed at empowering students with autism and other special needs as they prepare for life beyond high school. This community-focused fair brought together a wide range of organizations, service providers, and educational resources to help bridge the gap between school and adult life.

The event served as a vital platform for families, students, and community members to learn more about available services and build relationships with agencies that provide long-term support. “The High Road School of Cecil County, based in Elkton, hosted its first Autism and Transition Resource Fair recently providing local families, students, and community members with access to critical resources for life after High Road.”

As many families in Cecil County continue to seek information about post-secondary options, this fair addressed the growing concern about the lack of employment opportunities and adult care services in the area. “The event addressed the growing need for post-secondary employment opportunities and additional care services in Cecil County, offering attendees guidance and connections to organizations.” Representatives from various organizations were on hand to share knowledge and offer guidance to those planning for the next steps in education, employment, and independent living.

The fair also emphasized the value of working together to support students with special needs, underlining how collaboration among local agencies can lead to more comprehensive and personalized care plans. “It also highlighted the importance of community collaboration, in ensuring that students with autism and special needs are informed about the resources necessary for a smooth transition.”

A diverse lineup of organizations participated in the event, each offering specialized services to support youth as they move into adulthood. “Among the participating organizations were the Cecil County Local Management Board Local Care Team, Chesapeake Care Resources, Inc., the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Rehabilitation Services, Neighborhood Youth Panel, All About Me Adult Day Program, Bayside Community Network, Inc., The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region, and Susquehanna Workforce Network.”

This successful first event reflects a growing recognition of the importance of transition planning and highlights how schools can play a central role in coordinating support systems. With strong community engagement and ongoing collaboration, the High Road School of Cecil County continues to be a beacon of support for families navigating the future.
