Neeyo Ouelega, a sixth grader at Argyle Middle School, along with her sister Seti Ouelega, a junior at Watkins Mill High School and college freshman at Montgomery College, have co-authored and self-published a children’s book titled “Marvelous Meghan: Our Big Sister.” This heartwarming book tells the story of their older sister, Meghan, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. The Ouelega sisters embarked on this creative journey not only to honor Meghan but also to share insights about her life and experiences with autism, aiming to foster understanding and empathy among young readers.
In addition to writing and publishing their book, the sisters, along with their family, take the time to share their experiences and Meghan’s story with fellow classmates and staff at Argyle. They believe that by sharing personal narratives, they can create a deeper connection and understanding of autism within their school community. “We feel like Autism is still a topic that people don’t really know much about,” said Seti Ouelega. “We felt the most effective way to spread awareness about it is to start with the kids because they are the next generation.” Through their storytelling, the Ouelega family hopes to inspire conversations about autism and promote a more inclusive environment for everyone.
The book emphasizes a vital message: while people on the autism spectrum may exhibit behavior and experience life differently, they also desire love, acceptance, and the opportunity to have fun just like everyone else. By sharing Meghan’s story, the sisters hope to bridge the gap between understanding and misconceptions about autism.
The journey of writing the story began in 2020, and it culminated in a significant milestone when they published the book in 2023, coinciding with Meghan’s 18th birthday. This timing adds an extra layer of celebration to their accomplishment, marking not just Meghan’s transition into adulthood but also the impact their book can have on others.
In sharing their story, Neeyo and Seti not only hope to educate their peers but also encourage other families to embrace the unique qualities of their loved ones on the autism spectrum. Their dedication to this cause is a testament to the powerful role of storytelling in fostering understanding and compassion.
